When selecting measurement and control systems, evaluate three components: base accuracy (±0.03% of span), measurement range and reference conditions.
 
For example, a transmitter with ±0.1% accuracy measuring 0-10 bar gives ±0.01 bar precision. Tighter control requires better accuracy or narrower spans. Temperature compensation features help maintain accuracy across varying operating conditions. 
 
For process control, repeatability often matters more than absolute accuracy. Safety systems need calibration certificates with traceability. Request installed accuracy data from suppliers: while reference accuracy reflects ideal lab conditions, installed accuracy accounts for vibration, temperature cycling and process effects.

Factory acceptance testing (FAT) verifies calibration against traceable standards across a full range of conditions and temperature extremes. 

 
During commissioning, perform zero and span calibration with known inputs—pressure sources, weights, temperatures. Compare them against reference standards and document discrepancies. 
 
Run functional testing under actual conditions during upsets. Make sure to verify that alarms trigger and diagnostics detect faults. 
 
Validation should be ongoing throughout the equipment’s lifecycle. Establish ongoing verification with periodic checks; trend data to identify drifting instruments.
